Space Traveler Craft

I am so excited to share this space travel craft I created with you all today! My kids were way into space when they were younger and while their interests have somewhat (not totally) diverged, I sort of got into space because of them. Space is really cool! I can’t believe it took me having kids who found space cool for me to realize that, but that’s one of the perks of homeschooling!

Supply list:

• Paper plate
• Scissors
• Paint (black for sure, white/yellow for stars, and then whatever colors you might like for planets)
• Paint brushes
• Sponge – cut into a star or diamond shape
• Brass fastener
• White construction paper/cardstock
• Tape or glue

Step 1: Take a paper plate and cut a slit in the middle. It should go as much of the length as is reasonable that it won’t make the plate fall apart. Tip: make the slit narrow, it is easier to enlarge the slit but if you make your slit too big, then you basically can’t walk it back at all and will have to start over. I suggest an adult do this step, especially if your kids are younger.

Step 2: Paint the entire paper plate black. Wait for it to dry (or if you are impatient, you can go on to the next step, but you’ll have to be careful to not let your colors mix).

Step 3: Use your star/diamond sponge and white paint to stamp on stars all over the plate. You can also freehand planets with paintbrushes. Whatever the space background you want, create that!

Step 4: While you are waiting for all of this to dry, draw your astronaut on the piece of white paper or cardstock. Be mindful of the size, you don’t want it to be too big. Or, if you’re like my son, you’ll draw a snailstronaut! When you are done cut it out. Tape or glue a brass fastener to the back of your astronaut.

Step 5: Once everything is dry, insert the astronaut’s brass fastener into the slot. Then, carefully slide it along and there you have it!
