Are you looking for some good art resources for your homeschool? These are some of the general resources that I discussed in my live video – watch that if you want a better idea of how I use these. Learning about art can be divided into two basic categories: Art History and the making of art.
Art History
- The Usborne Introduction to Art – This book is a great staple to have, covering many different time periods as well as styles. It contains plenty of full color artworks to serve as examples of the time periods and techniques as well as styles.
- Vincent’s Starry Night and Other Stories by Michael Bird – This book appears to be out of print now, but it is such an excellent art history book, telling the history of art through engaging stories about artists and their world.
- Art museums – I really encourage you to take your children to an art museum. Even young children can get a lot out of a visit to an art museum and many of them have programs that can help young children engage more with the art. Look around your area for what art museums might be near by. Right now, because of covid, many art museums are offering virtual tours and this can be another option for exploring art museums from your own home. Here are just a few offering virtual tours or videos – but tons more can be found if you look:
- Art Question Cards – The original art question cards I used are no longer available – it’s a bummer to me too, but I’m working to find a replacement!
Making Art
- Smudge by Soulfire Sundries – This is unfortunately no longer available! Sorry! It’s a bummer to me too.
- Deep Space Sparkle – I love the projects on Deep Space Sparkle. I do do craft projects with my kids sometimes, but I love doing real art projects better. Art projects where you have the room and space to be creative because you’re not trying for a preconceived outcome. And Deep Space Sparkle has tons of projects like that.
- The Usborne Complete Book of Art Ideas – I’m not going to say this is the only art idea book you will ever need because I certainly know that sometimes you want to get specific books for specific things, but this book is very comprehensive. If you explored every art project in this book, you would have plenty.
This list is by no means comprehensive. These are just some of the resources we enjoy in our homeschool. If you’d like more custom art resources for your homeschool, feel free to reach out.
