Review: Names of God: Growing Strong by Grace Fox is a Christian living devotional aimed primarily at adults who want to go deeper into the many names of God and how they effect our lives.
This devotional features seven lessons on the names of God, with each devotional featuring personal stories that connect to the name, examples of its use in the Bible, in depth analysis of what the word means, how we can apply and use this knowledge to deepen our faith journey, a written prayer, points to ponder, and a QR code to scan an included video with even more knowledge.
This study is suitable for both individual use and small group use – though I think with this format I would prefer to use it for small groups. I can, however, understand its benefit for personal use as well.
The devotional content was good – I appreciated that after reading it, I felt my faith deepen and I felt like I had practical next steps to take in my faith. However, readers should be aware that it does contain some decision theology and should practice discernment in this regard.
I appreciated the generous use of personal stories (for the most part – there were one or two that didn’t resonate with me), as well as Grace’s encouragement that our own stories may not be that way, but that doesn’t mean God can’t work through our lives in different ways.
This book is part of a series of books on the names of God. This one focuses on strength and I did feel that theme was woven well throughout the book and the study. The writing style flows well and it is easily readable as well. Visually, the color green and trees featured on the cover and throughout give the pages a calming presence.
This book encouraged me in my faith life to remember that God is strong and powerful and He is present in my life, ready to help. Readers searching for a devotional, especially for small group use, will find this a helpful and uplifting book to dig into.
