When we started homeschooling, math and science were two subjects that really intimidated me. Can you relate? These were subjects I felt I understood well enough, but teaching them felt out of my depth. That’s why I was intrigued when I learned about SPORK Education and their unique approach to combining science and math.
SPORK Education Takes a Multifaceted Approach
One thing that I appreciated about SPORK Education is that it has several modalities of learning. The manipulative kit that it comes with is awesome. I do feel that the program could offer more suggestions or ways to use them, but I love that they are an option, because figuring out the math in different ways helps your brain learn.
SPORK Butterfly Math & Science K-2 also has a workbook (or printable pages – you can pick the option that works for your family) and games. The games are basic – perfect if you don’t like fast paced games with a lot options. There are no avatars to distract kids – there’s just a basic task to finish. There is an app you can download, but we found it worked better for us to play the games on my computer, since we don’t often use a tablet for school.
I do have to admit I found the parts a bit challenge to navigate and pull together. I was able to pull it off because I have a lot of homeschool experience and I am comfortable adapting to make materials work for me. I found it easiest to work from the parent side to figure out what order to do things in, but then you have to be careful that your kids don’t see the answers.
Science and Math Integrated in SPORK Education
Science and math really go hand in hand. Math is often crucial for science. So not only do I understand the reasoning behind putting this together, but I support it.
Lessons have short sections, some math and some science. Different math concepts are taught alongside different science concepts. Some of the science concepts in the level we were looking at include things like what’s the difference between a plant, animal, and fungus and what body parts different animals have.
This science is not experiment heavy, so if curriculum with a lot of experiments feels too much for you, SPORK Education may be a good fit. It is very nice to have one resource for two subjects.

There are options, so you do not need to order every part. If you’d prefer to print your own instead of ordering a workbook, for example, that is an option.
SPORK Education Provides Variety
My kid enjoyed SPORK Education because of the variety between working in the workbook and playing the games. We found it worked best to sit down together and work on them. The resources are bright and colorful. My son appreciated the pictures and found them fun. Overall, our learning time was a pleasant bonding time along with learning that we appreciated.
SPORK Butterfly Math & Science K-2 includes an 18 month license (for the online part) – which I do appreciate. Often times, programs offer a 12 month license, which I don’t always feel is enough time. I feel 18 months is a very reasonable and fair time that allows you to go at your own pace.
SPORK Education offers an option for experienced homeschool parents that would like to integrate math and science with various modes like simple computer games and workbook pages.
