I am SO excited today to bring you this review of eat2explore! My family has tried eat2explore before and so we were thrilled to have this opportunity to work with them.
eat2explore is a family cooking kit that focuses on learning about different cultures through cooking! They provide you with the recipes and the how-to along with special seasonings and mixes that can be hard to find. I was sent the Greece box. Though we have also done the Brazil box and the China box in the past.
What’s in the box?
Every box includes:
- 3 recipe cards
- Essential spices, sauces, and mixes (you buy all the other ingredients)
- Shopping list
- Informational and educational sheets about the country
- Fun cooking tool
- Passport, passport sticker, and flag pin
See for yourself in this unboxing that I did! (Note: for the best viewing experience, I suggest clicking the button in the lower right hand corner to enlarge the video.)
In the Greek box, the three recipes were chicken souvlaki, Greek baked fish, and Greek lamb burger.
Chicken Souvlaki
This was by far our favorite dish from the Greek box. It was a delightfully light dish. My older son actually made this one all on his own. The recipes are clearly written out with pictures that make it easy for kids to help or to cook independently if they are used to cooking on their own.
The seasoning packets are excellent. When my son opened his first one, he said “Wow, mom, smell this!” I took a whiff and the scent was amazing. It was so fragrant and I couldn’t wait to taste it. You can tell just from the scent that these are really high quality seasonings.
Greek Baked Fish
This dish turned out so pretty, but was overall our least favorite recipe. I think that was just though because we are not a big fish eating family. I think looking at the recipe it had all the right combinations of things to be delicious – we just aren’t fish people.
One of the things that my kids really enjoy about eat2explore is the passport! This allows them to rate the dishes that we have tried between 1-10. I think the power in the rating is that it helps to encourage them to try new things. They can try it and be honest about what they think about it – they don’t have to love it. I don’t expect that they will love everything they try (I certainly don’t) but anything that encourages them to branch out and try new things is a win in my book.
Greek Lamb Burger
We also really enjoyed the Greek lamb burgers! My older son especially enjoyed the tomato and cucumber salad which was an awesome surprise for me. What I really appreciated about this recipe was how adaptable it was. I was supposed to use Greek yogurt and I thought I had some, but then when I looked and I didn’t have any, I was able to sub sour cream – no problem! Same with these lamb burgers. I would have loved to have lamb in them, but my grocery store didn’t have any, so I used what they did have and used ground beef. It still turned out awesome. So that flexibility and ability to substitute to fit your family’s need is a really great feature!
Other Great Reasons to Love eat2explore
Not only can you substitute as needed, but eat2explore can also accommodate gluten free families and vegetarian families! Indeed, our recipes came with the options to make the recipes vegetarian if we wanted (and maybe I should have substituted cauliflower for the fish! That was an option). I know many boxes like this can be hard to handle if your family has special dietary needs, but eat2explore tries really hard to provide options.
Another thing that I really love about eat2explore that you can choose either to sign up for a subscription or you can get individual boxes. This is great because if you are planning on studying a specific country, you can get a box that pairs with it. You can also involve your children in the choosing process and get them excited too.
The recipes are meant to serve a family and I really do find that they serve plenty. In fact, our family of four often has leftovers. If you really love a certain seasoning, you can even order bigger packages of individual seasonings as well!
Lastly, but not least, I love the strong educational focus that eat2explore has. We were very easily able to make a whole mini-unit study on Greece just using the materials they provided to us. Not only are the information and educational sheets they send out excellent, but you can also go online to their website and get extra educational options. We really liked these extra lesson plans that came online – they touched lightly on several different areas of learning and got us doing some additional hands on activities, with things to read and videos to watch. I really appreciate that adding education is a strong part of their mission. I think that really sets them apart compared to other options out there, especially for homeschoolers. Combining those two, plus the cooking, they really do help to give your kids not only more cooking skills, but a cultural education with opportunities to practice other skills as well.
